Coder to Developer by Mike Gunderloy |

Have you ever had that nagging sense that you don't know all that you ought to know. I had felt that way ever since .NET came out. I knew enough to do what I had to do (develop custom Microsoft Access applications) but ever wondered if I could do anything else. Would anybody take me seriously as a developer?
So I got to work. I have been reading insatiously for 3 years now learning about Object Oriented Design and other must-knows for the serious .NET developer. Nevertheless…the nagging sense persisted. And I probably have a half-dozen books in my library all bought in hopes that I would learn just enough to get oovercome it. None of them helped.
Then I found Coder to Developer. It was just the book I was looking for. Coder to Developer is a book PERFECTLY suited for the self-taught VBA programmer trying to learn how to be a "real" developer… |

Joel on Software by Joel Spolsky |

I first read about Joel On Software in the Coder to Developer Book (previously reviewed here) . Apparently, Joel on Software is one of the (perhaps THE) most popular website on the net for programmers. So I checked it out. As happens often nowadays, authors of popular websites are being given the chance to publish. So when I saw that the most popular and best recieved content of the website were published I bought the book.
I KNEW I was going to like the book the first time I read the end of the introduction which says:
Much of this books content first appeared as a series of articles on my website, Joel on Software (www.joelonsoftware.com), where I've been writing up my thoughts for the last couple of years. The book you hold in your hands is, I hope, a heck of a lot more cohesive than the website, where by cohesive I mean "can be read in the bathtub without fear of electrocution." I laughed and the read the whole book in about a week. Even if your not a technical professional, you should enjoy the book because Joel is a really fine writer.
