Joel on Software by Joel Spolsky

I first read about Joel On Software in the Coder to Developer Book previously reviewed here . Apparently, Joel on Software is one of the (perhaps THE) most popular website on the net for programmers. So I checked it out. As happens often nowadays, authors of popular websites are being given the chance to publish. So when I saw that the most popular and best recieved content of the website were published I bought the book.

I KNEW I was going to like the book the first time I read the end of the introduction which says:
Much of this books content first appeared as a series of articles on my website, Joel on Software (www.joelonsoftware.com), where I've been writing up my thoughts for the last couple of years. The book you hold in your hands is, I hope, a heck of a lot more cohesive than the website, where by cohesive I mean "can be read in the bathtub without fear of electrocution."
I laughed and the read the whole book in about a week. Even if your not a technical professional, you should enjoy the book because Joel is a really fine writer.

The book is very eclectic. It is divided into four parts.
  1. Part one is targeted toward programmers.
  2. Part two is targeted toward software project managers.
  3. Part three is eclectic and are Joel's random musings on a variety of technical and business related issues.
  4. Part four is a rant against and in praise of the Microsoft .NET initiative.
All parts are interesting and well worth reading.

If you don't have any money, and you are not fearful of electrocution, all of the articles can be read online. Below you will find hyperlinks to some of my favorite articles:

Painless Functional Specs (Part 1 of 4)
Painless Software Schedules
Two Stories
The Economics of Open Source
How Microsoft Lost the API War

ENJOY!
